Why your child's math score tells you almost nothing

Two children. Both scored 68%. One has strong foundations with a single fixable gap. The other is memorising methods that will collapse under Grade 6 pressure. The score cannot tell them apart.

Imagine two children in Grade 5. Both score 68% on the same math paper.

Child A understands fractions deeply but made four careless errors under time pressure and struggled with two word problems she had never seen that format of before.

Child B cannot explain why the method works, but has practised enough past papers that the patterns are memorised. The 68% is held together by repetition. Introduce an unfamiliar question type — which Grade 6 will — and the score falls apart.

The teacher sees two 68% students. The parents see two 68% students. But the children are in completely different places, and the right response for each of them is completely different.

What a score actually measures

A score tells you how many questions your child got right on the day, on that paper, in that format. That is it.

It does not tell you:

  • Whether the right answers came from understanding or memory
  • Whether the wrong answers came from a concept gap or time pressure
  • How your child behaves when they hit a question they do not recognise
  • Whether performance holds up across a full-length paper or collapses in the second half
  • Whether your child can apply what they know in a different context

Each of these questions has a different answer — and each answer points to a different intervention.

Why this matters more in Pakistan specifically

The Pakistani curriculum is heavily exam-oriented. Most practice is built around past papers and repeated formats. A child who is good at recognising question patterns will score well in primary school tests — and then hit a wall when the format changes, the difficulty jumps, or the subject demands reasoning over recall.

Grade 7 and 8 are where this wall tends to appear. Parents are often shocked because the grades were fine until then. The grades were fine because the gaps were hidden under a system that rewarded pattern recognition. The system changed. The gaps stayed.

The questions worth asking instead

Instead of "what did you score?", the more useful questions are:

Which section did the marks drop in — Foundation, Core, or Challenge? A drop in Foundation means something more fundamental than a drop in Challenge.

Where are the errors concentrated — the start, middle, or end of the paper? End-heavy errors are a stamina signal. Scattered errors are a knowledge signal.

What happens when the question is worded differently? This tests transfer — whether your child owns the concept or just the method.

These are hard questions to answer by looking at a marked paper. They require a diagnostic — something designed to surface patterns, not just count marks.

What to do differently

The goal is not to stop caring about scores. Scores matter. The goal is to treat scores as a starting point rather than a conclusion.

When a score comes back — good or bad — the first question should be: what kind of mistakes were these? A single diagnostic challenge that goes beyond right and wrong can answer that question. It turns a number into a map.

That map tells you whether to practice more, practice differently, or practice different things entirely. Without it, most extra studying is guesswork — and guesswork is expensive in time and motivation for the child who already feels like they are trying.
